The Ballad of Peter & Gracie: Peter and his dog raced here and through fields so wid. With dreams in their pockets and stars as their guide. Every day's an adventure under the open sky In their world of stories, time just flies by.
Peter McCully: The morning sun peeked through Peter's bedroom window, painting his room in warm golden light. He had been awake since dawn, too. Excited to sleep any longer, today wasn't just any ordinary day.
It was Saturday and Saturday meant adventure. Peter bounced excitedly on his toes as he fastened the bright blue leash to Gracie's collar. His fluffy white American Eskimo dog wagged her tail so hard that her whole body wiggled like a happy marshmallow. Today was a special day. They were going to Buckerfields.
The Farm Supply store were all sorts of wonderful adventures, waited for them. Now, Gracie Peter said, kneeling down to look into his dog's sparkling dark eyes. Mom says, we can get you some treats, and guess what? We're getting baby chicks too. Gracie responded with a happy woof that made Peter giggle. Her fluffy white ears perked up at the word treats, and she did a little dance that made her look like a bouncing cloud.
Peter's mom smiled as she grabbed her purse and car keys. She'd been planning this trip for weeks ever since Peter started saving his allowance money. Every morning he would count as coins and dollars updating that little chart on the wall that showed how close he was to his goal. Even Gracie seemed to understand the importance of saving.
Sitting patiently by Peter's side as he carefully counted each penny ready for our big adventure. She asked watching her son and his four-legged best friend, practically bouncing off the walls with excitement. Peter had been saving his allowance for weeks to buy Gracie some special treats. I. And today was finally the day plus spring had arrived, which meant it was time to add some new feathered friends to their backyard family.
The car ride to Buckerfields seemed to take forever, even though it was only 15 minutes away. Peter spent the whole time telling Gracie about all the different kinds of treats they might find while she sat perfectly in the backseat, her fluffy tail thumping against the cushion. Every time Peter said that magic word.
Treat as they pulled into the parking lot, Peter could hardly contain himself. The big red building with its farm style facade looked like a treasure chest of possibilities. Gracie's nose was already working overtime, twitching with excitement as she caught all the fascinating smells. Her keen nose could detect the sweet scent of fresh hay, the earthy aroma of garden seeds and the unmistakable smell.
Of other animals. Peter had learned in school that dogs had super powered noses. And watching Gracie take in all the interesting smells, wafting from the store, treats hay, feed, and all sorts of farm animals. Remember Peter's mom reminded them as they walked towards the entrance. Gracie needs to be on her best behavior.
There might be other animals inside. Peter nodded solemnly. He knew Gracie was the best behaved dog in the whole world, but he still gave her a fur, a gentle pat and whispered. I. Best manners. Okay. The automatic door swoosh open and Peter's eyes went wide with Wonder. Buckerfields's always felt like stepping into another world.
The aisle stretched out before them, like pathways to adventure filled with everything from garden tools to pet supplies, to firm equipment. The air smelled like hay and cedar shavings with a hint of sweet feed that made Gracie's nose twitch. Treats first or chicks first. Peter's mom asked knowing exactly what her son would choose.
Treats!, Peter exclaimed. While Gracie gave an enthusiastic bark of agreement, they headed down the pet supply aisle where boxes and bags of every kind of treat imaginable lined the shelves. Peter had saved up 12 whole dollars, and he intended to make them count. He carefully examined each option reading the labels out loud to Gracie, who sat patiently beside him, her tail sweeping the floor.
Look, Gracie, these ones are shaped like little bones, and these ones are made with real chicken. Oh, and these ones are good for your teeth. After much deliberation, Peter selected three different kinds of treats, some crunchy biscuits shaped like little firm animals. Some chewy strips that promised to keep Gracie's teeth clean and a special premium cookie that the label said was like ice cream for dogs.
He carefully counted out his money while Gracie watched her eyes never leaving the treats in Peter's hand. You can give her one now, his mom said, but save the rest for home. Peter carefully opened the firm animal biscuits and pulled out a treat shaped like a little sheep. Gracie took it ever so gently from his hand.
Her tail wagging with joy as she crunched it up. Her good manners made Peter Beam with pride. Next came the most exciting part, choosing their new chicks. The feed store had a special area where heat lamps kept, the baby chickens warm, their soft peeping filling the air like tiny bells. Peter pressed his face against the clear plastic bins, watching the fluffy little balls of yellow, brown, and black scurrying around.
Remember, we're getting four chicks. His mom reminded him that's the perfect number for our backyard coop. Peter nodded, but choosing just four seemed impossible when they were all so cute. Gracie sat beside him watching the chicks with curious eyes, but staying calm and gentle, just like she'd been trained.
A friendly store employee named Dan came over to help them. He had been working at Bucker Fields for over 10 years and loved helping families choose their chickens. When he saw how gently Gracie was watching the chicks, he smiled even wider. You have a very special dog there. He told Peter, most dogs get too excited around the chicks, but look how calm she is.
Peter beamed with pride. Reaching down to Pat Gracie's head. She wore a green apron, covered in wood shavings, and had a kind smile that made Peter feel instantly comfortable. I. Would you like to hold one? He asked Peter. He wore a green apron, covered in wood shavings, and had a kind smile that made Peter feel instantly comfortable.
Would you like to hold one? He asked Peter, who nodded eagerly. Dan carefully scooped up a yellow check and placed it in Peter's cup. Tans. The tiny creature was so light. It felt like holding a warm cotton ball. Its little heartbeat fast against Peter's palms. And its fuzzy feathers tickled his skin. This one's a Rhode Island Red.
Dan said when she grows up, she'll lay beautiful brown eggs. They're also known for being friendly chickens who love to follow their owners around the garden. Some people even call them puppy chickens because they're so social. Peter giggled at the idea of a chicken acting like a puppy, and even Gracie seemed amused.
Her tail wagging gently. Peter was sold immediately. Can we get this one mum please? His mother smiled and nodded, and Dan placed the chick in a special cardboard box with air holes and soft bedding. They chose three more chicks. One was a Rhode Island red, another a black and white speckled, one called a barred rock.
While Dan prepared their box of chicks, Peter's mom grabbed some chicken feed. And fresh bedding for the coop. Gracie watched everything with interest, occasionally glancing at the treat bags in Peter's hand, as if to remind him they were still there. As they walked to the checkout counter, Peter felt his heart might burst with happiness.
Not only did he have treats for his best friend, but they were bringing home four new additions to the family. The chicks peeped softly in their box, and Gracie walked extra careful as she knew she needed to protect her new siblings. The drive home was filled with excited chatter, as Peter told Gracie all about how they would raise the chicks.
You'll have to be very gentle with them. He explained seriously, they're babies now, but soon there'll be big chickens laying eggs for us. Gracie listened closely, occasionally letting out a soft woof of agreement. When they got home, Peter's dad was waiting to help them set up the brooder box for the chicks in the garage.
They had to prepare the day before with fresh bedding, a heat lamp, and little dishes for food and water. Peter carefully helped transfer each chick from the travel box to their new home while Gracie watched from a respectful distance, what should we name them? Peter's dad asked as they watched the chicks explore their new place.
Peter thought hard about it. The yellow ones can be sunshine and buttercup. The black and white one could be pepper. After the chicks were settled, it was finally time for Gracie's special treat tasting. They went to the backyard where Peter sat cross-legged in the grass with Gracie sitting patiently in front of him.
He opened each bag of treats with ceremony like he was presenting treasures to a queen. Okay, Gracie, he said, seriously, we're gonna try them all and figure out which ones are your favorite. He started with the firm animal biscuits, giving her one shape like a cow. This time Gracie crunched it happily, her tail wagging and approval the chewy dental treat came next, which she savored for several minutes.
And finally, the special ice cream cookie, which made her do a little dance of joy. Peter's parents watched from the patio smiling at the pure happiness radiating from their son and his furry best friend. I think this was the best day ever. Peter announced giving Gracie a big hug. She responded by covering his face with gentle kisses, clearly agreeing with his assessment.
As the afternoon sun began to sink lower in the sky, Peter and Gracie made several trips to the garage to check on the chicks. Each time Gracie would lie down at a safe distance watching the tiny birds with gentle curiosity. She seemed to understand that these little creatures were special and needed to be protected.
Peter noticed how she would perk up her ears whenever one of the chicks peeped particularly loud as if to make sure they were okay. It reminded him of how she always watched over him when he played in the backyard. Peter would tell her stories about how the chicks would grow into beautiful hens and how they would all be one big happy family that evening.
As Peter got ready for bed, he couldn't stop smiling. His mom helped him set up a baby monitor in the garage so they could hear the chicks and the soft sound of their peeping filled his bedroom like a gentle lullaby. Gracie curled up in her usual spot at the foot of the bed. Her new treats safely stored in a special container on his dresser.
You know what? Gracie Peter whispered as he snuggled under his covers, today was perfect. We got you yummy treats, and now we have four new friends to take care of. You're going to be the best big sister to those chicks. Gracie lifted her head and gave a quiet wolf of agreement before settling back down.
As Peter drifted off to sleep, he thought about all the adventures that lay ahead, teaching the chicks to eat from his hand, watching them grow into beautiful hens, collecting fresh eggs, and having Gracie there every step of the way. His heart felt full of love for his fluffy white guardian and their new feathered family members.
He'd already started drawing pictures of what he imagined each chick would look like when they grew up, and he'd hung those artwork pieces on his bedroom wall. Gracie would often sit and look at the drawings with him as he explained his color choices and why he thought pepper would have the prettiest feathers of all in the quiet of the night.
With Gracie's gentle breathing and the distant peeping of the chicks creating a peaceful symphony, Peter knew that sometimes the very best adventures didn't require traveling for at all. Sometimes they were found in the simple joy of a trip to Buckerfields with your best friend. Some carefully chosen treats and the promise of new friendships waiting in bloom the next morning would bring more excitement as they began their journey of raising chickens.
But for now, Peter and Gracie slept peacefully, both dreaming of treats and tiny peeping friends and all the wonderful moments they would share together as their family grew one fluffy chick at a time. In the weeks have followed Peter and Gracie's Adventure At Buckerfields's proved to be just the beginning of amazing journey.
The chicks grew quickly developing new feathers and personalities that made Peter laugh every day. Gracie proved to be the perfect big sister, always gentle and protective. Watching over her feathered siblings with the same loving care she showed Peter. The treats from Buckerfields became a special part of their daily routine.
Each evening after checking on the growing chicks, Peter would give Gracie one of her special treats as a reward for being such a good guardian. She never failed to take each treat with perfect manners, making Peter proud of his wonderful four-legged friend. As spring turned into summer, Peter looked back on that magical day of bunker fields and smiled.
He had learned so much about responsibility, care, and friendship, but most importantly, he had discovered that the best adventures are the ones shared with those you love. Whether they have fur feathers or just a heartful of joy, and every time they drove past Buckerfields, Gracie's tail would start to wag.
Remembering that day their family grew bigger. One peep and one treat at a time.
