Eddie Van Haddock & The Rockfish: In a little town by the sea where the stories never end, lived Captain Dave and his crew, every child's favorite friend. With a smile as wide as the ocean and a heart that's full of dreams, he sails a mellow submarine where magic gleams and beams. Every morning at sunrise, when the world awakes anew, Captain Dave and his crew set sail in waters deep and blue. Through the ticking clock of time, where adventures come alive, they laugh and learn and play each day in their underwater dive.
Dave Graham: Deep beneath the sparkling blue waters of the Pacific Ocean, a bright yellow submarine glided peacefully through the kelp forests. This wasn't just any submarine—it was the mellow submarine painted with cheerful sunflowers and rainbow stripes that made all the fish smile as it passed by.
"Good morning, Larry!" called Captain Dave from the pilot seat, adjusting his favorite blue captain's hat with the golden anchor pin. "Beautiful day for a voyage, don't you think, Larry?"
The lobster scuttled across the submarine's floor, his bright red shell gleaming under the submarine's warm lights. He was polishing a small brass compass with one of his claws.
"Aye, aye, Captain Dave! The water's as clear as sea glass today. Perfect for—" Suddenly, Larry's stomach made a loud rumbling sound that echoed through the submarine's cozy cabin.
"Oh my!" laughed Captain Dave, stroking his neatly trimmed beard. "Sounds like someone's hungry. Why don't you check out our pantry there, first mate Larry?"
Larry clicked his claws together excitedly and scurried to the submarine's tiny kitchen. The mellow submarine had the coziest little galley you could imagine, with copper pots hanging on hooks around the porthole window and shelves lined with mason jars. But when Larry opened the pantry door, his eyes grew as wide as sand dollars.
"Captain Dave!" Larry called out, his voice echoing with worry. "We have a problem. Our pantry is emptier than a hermit crab's old shell!"
Captain Dave left the steering wheel and joined Larry in the kitchen. Sure enough, their shelves held nothing but a few crumbs of sea biscuits, one lonely can of kelp soup, and a jar of pickled sea beans that had seen better days.
"Well, blow me down!" Captain Dave exclaimed, scratching his head. "We've been so busy exploring the ocean depths that we forgot to restock our supplies. What shall we do, Larry?"
Larry tapped his claw thoughtfully against his shell. "I have an idea, Captain. Why don't we surface and visit that lovely little town we passed last week—Qualicum Beach? I remember seeing shops and friendly people walking along the shore."
Captain Dave's eyes lit up like lighthouse beacons. "That's a splendid idea, Larry! We haven't been on land in ages. It'll be quite the adventure. Plus, I heard the folks in Qualicum Beach are the friendliest people on the whole coast."
"And maybe," Larry added with a hopeful wiggle of his antennae, "we might find some new cooking gadgets to make our sea shanty suppers even more delicious."
"Periscope up!" announced Captain Dave, pulling down a brass periscope decorated with carved starfish. He peered through it, turning it left and right. "I can see the shore, Larry. There's Qualicum Beach, looking as beautiful as a mermaid's song."
Larry scrambled up to look through a small porthole. "Oh, Captain, look at all those colorful shops! And see those flags fluttering in the breeze? Oh, this is going to be the most exciting shore leave we've ever had!"
With a gentle whoosh and a happy gurgle, the mellow submarine broke through the surface of the water. Captain Dave opened the submarine's top hatch, and fresh salty air filled their cozy cabin. Seagulls circled overhead, calling out cheerful hellos, and the warm sunshine painted everything golden.
As they approached the dock, Larry noticed a few people gathering to watch their colorful submarine. Children pointed excitedly, and adults smiled and waved. The mellow submarine was certainly a sight to see with its bright yellow paint and cheerful decorations.
"Ahoy there!" called out a fisherman with a kind face and a beard as white as sea foam. "Welcome to Qualicum Beach! That's the most beautiful submarine I've ever laid eyes on."
Captain Dave tipped his hat politely. "Thank you kindly, sir. I'm Captain Dave, and this is my first mate, Larry the lobster. We're hoping to restock our pantry and maybe explore your wonderful town."
"Well, you've come to the right place," the fisherman replied. "Qualicum Beach has the finest shops and the friendliest folks you'll find anywhere on Vancouver Island. Oh, you'll want to visit Patrick's kitchen store. He's got everything a seafaring cook could need."
They climbed out of the submarine and onto the wooden dock. Captain Dave's sea legs took a moment to adjust to the solid ground, and Larry had to get used to scuttling on wood instead of the submarine's smooth metal floors. But soon they were walking confidently toward the town.
The dock led to a beautiful beach where families were building sandcastles and collecting shells. Children were flying colorful kites shaped like sea creatures, and couples walked hand in hand. Everyone they passed smiled and waved at the unusual pair—a cheerful sea captain and his bright red lobster companion.
"Look, Larry," Captain Dave pointed to a path lined with beach grass and wildflowers. "That must lead to the main street the fisherman mentioned."
As they walked up the gentle hill, they could see the charming town of Qualicum Beach spread out before them. There were shops with bright awnings, cafés with outdoor tables, and flower boxes overflowing with petunias and marigolds. The air smelled like salt water, fresh bread, and blooming flowers. Children were enjoying ice cream cones, and street musicians played gentle melodies that mixed with the sound of seagulls and ocean waves.
Captain Dave and Larry walked slowly, taking in all the wonderful sights and sounds. "There it is, Larry!" exclaimed Captain Dave, pointing with his finger. "Patrick's kitchen store!"
The shop windows were filled with gleaming pots, colorful dish towels, and cooking gadgets that sparkled in the sunlight. A cheerful sign painted with a chef's hat and a wooden spoon read: "Patrick's Kitchen Store—Everything for the Creative Cook."
Captain Dave opened the door, and a little bell chimed a welcome tune. The shop smelled like cinnamon and vanilla, and soft jazz music played from hidden speakers. Shelves lined every wall, filled with wonderful cooking tools, beautiful dishes, and ingredients from around the world.
"Welcome to my shop!" called a voice from behind the counter. A tall, friendly man with curly gray hair and an apron covered in pictures of vegetables appeared. He had laugh lines around his eyes and flour on his hands. "I'm Patrick, the owner. How can I help you folks today?"
Captain Dave removed his hat politely. "Good day, Patrick. I'm Captain Dave, and this is my first mate, Larry. We're visiting from our submarine in the harbor, and we need to restock our pantry with some delicious supplies."
Patrick's eyes widened with delight when he saw Larry. "Well, I'll be! A real lobster, and wearing the most adorable sailor hat I've ever seen! Larry, it's a pleasure to meet you."
Larry blushed under his red shell, but he felt very proud. "It's wonderful to meet you too, Patrick. Captain Dave and I love to cook aboard our submarine, but our pantry is as empty as a tidal pool at low tide."
Patrick laughed heartily. "Well, you've come to exactly the right place. I have everything you need to create delicious meals fit for seafaring adventures. But first, tell me—what kinds of foods do you like to cook on your submarine?"
Captain Dave and Larry looked at each other with excitement. They loved talking about cooking almost as much as they loved eating.
"Well," began Captain Dave, "we enjoy making hearty stews that warm us up during stormy weather. And we love fresh fish that we catch ourselves, prepared with herbs and spices that make our whole submarine smell like a gourmet restaurant."
"And don't forget our famous sea shanty pancakes!" added Larry, doing a little dance with his claws. "We make them shaped like starfish and sand dollars, and we serve them with kelp syrup and seaberry compote."
Patrick's eyes sparkled with interest. "Sea shanty pancakes! That sounds absolutely delightful. I have just the thing to help you make them even more special." He led them to a display of cooking tools and picked up a set of pancake molds shaped like various sea creatures. "These will help you make perfect pancakes shaped like seahorses, whales, and even tiny submarines!"
"They're perfect, Patrick!" Captain Dave agreed. "What else would you recommend for our submarine kitchen?"
Patrick rubbed his hands together thoughtfully. "Let me show you around. For a submarine kitchen, you need tools that work well in small spaces but can create big flavors."
He led them through the store, pointing out various treasures. There were wooden spoons carved by local artisans, each one unique and beautiful. There were small but efficient vegetable peelers, compact spice grinders, and a set of nesting bowls that would save space in their tiny galley.
As they continued exploring the store, Patrick noticed how well Captain Dave and Larry worked together. They discussed each item thoughtfully, considering how it would work in their submarine kitchen and what delicious meals they could create together.
"You know," Patrick said with a warm smile, "I can tell you two are not just captain and first mate—you're true friends who genuinely care about each other. That's the secret ingredient that makes any meal special."
Captain Dave put his hand gently on Larry's shell. "Larry is the best friend and first mate anyone could ask for. He keeps our submarine spotless, he helps navigate through storms, and he makes every day an adventure."
Larry's eyes shone with happiness. "And Captain Dave taught me everything I know about cooking and sailing. He's patient, kind, and always makes me feel important and valued."
Patrick was so touched by their friendship that he had an idea. "I'd like to give you something special," he said, disappearing into the back room. When he returned, he was carrying a beautiful wooden recipe box with brass hinges and a small brass nameplate.
"This belonged to my grandmother," Patrick explained. "She was a wonderful cook who believed that food tastes best when it's made with love and shared with friends. I'd like you to have it, along with some of her favorite recipes that I've written out on cards."
Captain Dave and Larry were speechless. The recipe box was beautiful, with intricate carvings of sea creatures and sailing ships around the edges.
"Patrick, this is too generous," Captain Dave protested. "We couldn't possibly accept such a precious gift."
"Nonsense," Patrick replied. "My grandmother always said that recipes are meant to be shared and kitchens are meant to bring people together. I can tell that you two will use this box to create wonderful meals and happy memories. That's exactly what she would've wanted."
With their new recipe box safely tucked in Captain Dave's bag, they continued shopping for provisions. Patrick helped them select the finest ingredients: locally grown vegetables that would stay fresh during long sea voyages, specialty grains and legumes perfect for hearty submarine stews, and an assortment of herbs and spices that would make their galley smell like a magical kitchen.
"These dried sea vegetables are harvested right here off the coast," Patrick explained, showing them packages of dulse, kelp, and sea lettuce. "They're incredibly nutritious and add wonderful ocean flavors to any dish."
Captain Dave selected several types of flour, including some made from ancient grains that Patrick said would make their sea biscuits even more delicious. They chose dried fruits for snacking and baking, nuts for adding crunch to their meals, and a selection of oils and vinegars for cooking and making salad dressings.
"Don't forget something sweet!" Patrick suggested, leading them to a display of local honey, maple syrup, and artisanal jams. "This wildflower honey is made by bees that visit the meadows overlooking the ocean, and this jam is made from berries that grow wild along the coastal trails."
As they gathered their purchases, Patrick had another wonderful idea. "Would you like me to show you how to make one of my grandmother's favorite recipes? We could use your new tools and some of the ingredients you've selected."
Captain Dave and Larry exchanged excited glances. "We'd love that!" they said in unison.
Patrick led them to a small kitchen area at the back of the store, complete with a stove, sink, and plenty of counter space. "This is where I test new products and sometimes give cooking classes," he explained. "Today we're going to make my grandmother's famous coastal chowder. It's perfect for submarine dining because it's warm, filling, and tastes even better the next day."
Patrick opened the recipe box and pulled out a card written in elegant handwriting. "Here's the recipe, written in my grandmother's own hand. She always said the secret was to layer the flavors, building them one at a time."
They began by sautéing onions, celery, and carrots in a large pot. The vegetables sizzled and filled the air with a wonderful aroma. Larry helped by stirring with one of their new wooden spoons while Captain Dave chopped potatoes with a sharp knife that Patrick showed him how to use safely.
"Now we add the herbs," Patrick instructed. "Bay leaves for depth, thyme for earthiness, and a touch of rosemary for complexity."
As they cooked together, Patrick shared stories about his grandmother and her love of cooking. Captain Dave told tales of their submarine adventures, and Larry described some of the amazing sea creatures they'd encountered in their travels.
"The key to good chowder," Patrick explained as they added fish stock to the pot, "is patience. Let all the flavors get to know each other, like good friends meeting for the first time."
Soon the kitchen was filled with the most incredible smell. The chowder bubbled gently, thick with vegetables, herbs, and chunks of local fish that Patrick had added at just the right moment.
"Time to taste!" Patrick announced, ladling the chowder into three bowls. He garnished each bowl with fresh parsley and a drizzle of the local honey they had purchased.
The three friends sat around a small table by the window. The chowder was absolutely delicious—rich, creamy, and full of flavors.
"This is the most wonderful chowder I've ever tasted!" declared Captain Dave, savoring each spoonful.
"It tastes like a warm hug from the ocean," added Larry, who had never experienced anything quite like it.
"You know," said Patrick thoughtfully, "I've been running this store for 20 years, and I've never met anyone quite like you two. You've reminded me of why I love cooking so much. It's not just about the food—it's about the love and friendship that goes into every meal."
Larry raised his small spoon in a toast. "To new friends, delicious food, and the adventures that bring us together!"
"Here, here!" agreed Captain Dave, clinking his spoon against Larry's.
"To friendship and flavor!" added Patrick, joining their toast.
After they finished their meal and carefully packed all their new purchases, it was time to say goodbye. Patrick walked with them back to the harbor, carrying some of their bags and continuing to share cooking tips along the way.
"Remember," Patrick said as they reached the dock, "cooking is like sailing. It's all about adjusting to conditions, trusting your instincts, and enjoying the journey as much as the destination."
The mellow submarine looked as cheerful as ever, decorated with seagulls who had perched on its periscope and railings. Captain Dave and Larry carefully loaded their new supplies into the submarine's pantry, arranging everything neatly with their new organizational containers.
"Thank you, Patrick," said Captain Dave, shaking his new friend's hand warmly. "Thank you for everything. You've given us so much more than cooking supplies. You've given us inspiration and friendship."
Larry scuttled over and gently touched Patrick's leg with his claw. "Will you visit us sometime? You could come aboard the Mellow Submarine and see where we use all these wonderful tools."
"I would love that," Patrick replied with a warm smile. "Maybe you could take me on a short cruise around the bay, and I could help you cook dinner in your submarine galley."
As Captain Dave started the submarine's engines, which hummed their familiar gentle tune, Patrick waved from the dock. Other townspeople had gathered to see off their unusual visitors, and children called out, "Goodbye, Captain Dave! Goodbye, Larry!"
The mellow submarine slowly backed away from the dock, then turned toward the open water. Captain Dave tooted the submarine's horn, which played a cheerful melody, and Larry waved his claws enthusiastically from the open hatch.
As they submerged beneath the waves and began their journey home, Captain Dave and Larry reflected on their wonderful day in Qualicum Beach.
"That was the best shore leave we've ever had!" said Larry, already looking through the recipe cards in their new recipe box. "Look at all these amazing recipes: Sailor's Sunrise Scramble, Ocean Breeze Bread, Mermaid's Garden Salad. I can't wait to try them all!"
Captain Dave smiled as he piloted the submarine through the kelp forests, which seemed even more beautiful than before. "Patrick was right, Larry. The secret ingredient in any recipe is the love and friendship that goes into it, and the best part about cooking is sharing it with someone special."
Over the following weeks, Captain Dave and Larry used their new kitchen tools to create the most amazing meals. They made sea shanty pancakes in the shape of seahorses for a family of curious dolphins. They prepared the coastal chowder during a gentle storm, and it warmed them perfectly as rain pattered on the submarine's hull. They even made sea buckthorn ice cream, which became Larry's new favorite dessert.
But the most special thing of all was the recipe box, which they filled with their own creations and discoveries. They wrote down the recipe for kelp and sea vegetable soup that they invented together, and they carefully recorded their method for making the perfect sea biscuits using Patrick's ancient grain flour.
Sometimes, on clear days when the water was especially calm, they would surface near Qualicum Beach and wave to Patrick, who always kept watch for his submarine friends. And they knew that someday soon they would return to share another meal and make new memories with their dear friend from the kitchen store.
After all, the best adventures are the ones that help you discover new friends, learn new things, and create delicious memories that last a lifetime.
