Eddie Van Haddock & The Rockfish: In a little town by the sea where the stories never end, lived Captain Dave and his crew, every child's favorite friend. With a smile as wide as the ocean and a heart that's full of dreams, he sails a mellow submarine where magic gleams and beams. Every morning at sunrise, when the world awakes anew, Captain Dave and his crew set sail in waters deep and blue. Through the ticking clock of time, where adventures come alive, they laugh and learn and play each day in their underwater dive.
Dave Graham: Deep beneath the sparkling waters of French Creek, where the sunlight danced through the waves like golden ribbons, lived Captain Dave and his very best friend, Larry the lobster. Captain Dave's first mate—and oh, what a first mate he was!
Larry had the biggest, kindest eyes you've ever seen, bright red claws that were somehow perfect for giving hugs, and a shell that gleamed like a ruby in the underwater light. He wore a tiny hat that matched Captain Dave's, and he was always ready for their next adventure together. They lived in the most wonderful submarine you could imagine: the Mellow Submarine.
It wasn't fast or flashy like other submarines. Instead, it was painted in soft, swirling colours of yellow, blue, and green that reminded everyone of a peaceful sunset. The submarine was round and cozy, with big bubble windows and a garden of sea flowers growing on its roof. Inside, there were comfortable cushions made from soft seaweed, walls decorated with beautiful shells, and a kitchen where Larry made the most delicious kelp sandwiches.
The Mellow Submarine moved through the water in a gentle swaying motion that made everyone who saw it feel calm and happy. It had a special horn that didn't go "beep beep" like other submarines, but instead played a soft, melodic tune that sounded like whale songs mixed with the tinkling of wind chimes.
One bright morning, a school of excited fish swam up to them, their fins fluttering with excitement. "Captain Dave! Larry!" called out Bella the blue fish, who was practically doing somersaults in the water. "Have you heard the news? The great underwater race is happening tomorrow!"
Captain Dave's eyes grew wide with curiosity. "A race? Tell us more, Bella."
"It's the most exciting race of the year!" squeaked Pip the puffer fish, who inflated a little bit with excitement. "All the fastest sea creatures and submarines will race around the entire French Creek underwater course. The winner gets the golden shell trophy!"
Larry's claws clicked together thoughtfully. "That sounds wonderful, but our Mellow Submarine isn't built for racing. We're more about enjoying the journey than rushing to the finish line."
But Captain Dave's eyes had begun to sparkle with interest—not because he wanted to win, but because he loved meeting new friends and having adventures. "You know what, Larry? Maybe we should enter. Think of all the amazing sea creatures we'll meet, and imagine how beautiful French Creek will look as we travel through it."
Larry looked at his dear friend and saw the genuine excitement in his eyes. Larry knew that Captain Dave never wanted to enter competitions to beat others, but because he enjoyed sharing experiences and making new friends.
"Well," Larry said with a warm smile, "if we're going to race, we should do it the Mellow Submarine way—with kindness, joy, and by helping others along the way."
"Exactly!" Captain Dave clapped his hands together. "Let's sign up!"
The next morning, French Creek was buzzing with more activity than it had seen all year. Sea creatures had come from far and wide to participate in or watch the great underwater race. There were sleek dolphins with submarines that looked like silver arrows, octopi with submarines that had eight different propellers, and speedy seahorses riding in submarines shaped like twisted shells.
At the starting line, Captain Dave and Larry looked around in amazement. Their Mellow Submarine, with its gentle curves and flower garden, looked quite different from all the other racing vessels. Some of the other competitors whispered and pointed, wondering how such a peaceful-looking submarine could possibly compete in a race.
"Welcome, racers, to the great underwater race!" Judge Wellington announced in his deep, echoing voice. "You will race through the winding passages of French Creek, around the Coral Reef Gardens, through the Kelp Forest Maze, past the Dancing Dolphin Falls, and back to the starting line. The first to cross the finish line wins the golden shell trophy!"
He raised a large shell to his mouth. "Racers, prepare yourselves! On your mark... get set..."
Captain Dave checked that Larry was securely seated and gave their submarine's controls a gentle pat. Larry adjusted his tiny hat and grinned at his friend.
The starting horn sounded across the creek, and the race began! Immediately, the faster submarines shot forward like colourful bullets through the water. The rocket-shaped submarine zoomed ahead, leaving a trail of bubbles. The dolphins' silver arrow submarine sliced through the water with incredible grace and speed. The octopi submarines spun and twisted, using all eight propellers to rocket forward.
The Mellow Submarine started forward too, but in its own gentle, swaying way. Instead of rushing, Captain Dave steered them through the water like they were dancing, moving in smooth, flowing motions that made the sea flowers on their roof wave beautifully in their wake.
"We're already behind everyone else," Larry observed, but he was smiling as he said it.
"That's okay," Captain Dave replied cheerfully. "Look how beautiful everything is when we take the time to really see it."
And he was right. As they entered the Coral Reef Gardens, Captain Dave and Larry found themselves surrounded by the most amazing underwater landscape. Coral formations rose from the sea bottom like fantastic cities painted in every colour imaginable: bright orange, deep purple, sunshine yellow, and ocean blue. Tropical fish darted between the coral branches like living jewels.
"Oh my," whispered Larry, his eyes wide with wonder. "I've never seen anything so beautiful."
They were so enchanted by the scenery that they almost didn't notice the small voice calling for help from behind a large piece of coral.
"Hello? Is someone there? Could you please help me?"
Captain Dave immediately steered the Mellow Submarine toward the voice. Behind the coral, they discovered the most unusual sight: a tiny submarine that looked like it was made entirely of seashells, with beautiful spiraling patterns and colours that shifted like mother-of-pearl. But the submarine wasn't moving, and sitting next to it was a small sea turtle who looked very worried.
"Hello there," Captain Dave called out kindly. "I'm Captain Dave, and this is my first mate, Larry. Are you okay?"
The little sea turtle looked up with relief. "Oh, thank goodness! I'm Shelly, and this is my submarine, the Pearl Dream. I was so excited to enter the race, but my engine started making funny noises, and now it won't work at all. I'm afraid I'll never finish the race now."
Larry immediately climbed out of the Mellow Submarine and swam over to Shelly. "Don't worry, we'll help you. I'm pretty good with engines. Let me take a look."
Soon, Larry's head was deep inside the Pearl Dream's engine compartment, and his tail was sticking out, wiggling with concentration.
"Ah, found the problem!" Larry called out cheerfully. "Just some seaweed tangled in the propeller. Give me a few minutes, and you'll be as good as new."
While Larry worked, more and more racers zoomed past them. The rocket submarine shot by so fast it created a whirlwind of bubbles. A submarine shaped like a manta ray glided over them with incredible speed. Even some of the smaller, less fancy submarines passed them by.
Shelly watched them go with sadness in her eyes. "I'll never catch up now. Even if Larry fixes my submarine, I'm the slowest racer here to begin with. Now I'm so far behind."
"Hey," Captain Dave said gently, swimming over to sit beside Shelly on a comfortable piece of coral. "Can I tell you a secret?"
Shelly nodded, curious.
"Larry and I didn't enter this race to win. We entered because we love adventures and meeting new friends like you. Sometimes the best part of any journey isn't where you end up, but who you meet along the way."
"But everyone will laugh at me for being so slow," Shelly said quietly.
"All fixed!" Larry announced, swimming back to them with a satisfied smile. His claws were covered in engine grease, but he looked proud of his work. "The Pearl Dream is ready to race!"
Shelly's face lit up. "Really? Oh, Larry, thank you so much!"
"Now," Captain Dave said, "we have a choice to make. We can continue racing and try to catch up with the others, or..." He paused, looking at both Larry and Shelly with a thoughtful expression.
"Or?" Shelly asked.
"Or we can race together," Larry said, understanding immediately what his friend was thinking. "The three of us, helping each other and enjoying the journey."
"But I'll slow you down even more," Shelly protested. "You've already done so much to help me."
Captain Dave shook his head. "Shelly, the Mellow Submarine has never been about going fast. It's about going together, seeing beautiful things, and helping friends. Besides, I have a feeling you know these waters better than anyone. Am I right?"
And so the three friends set off together, travelling through French Creek in a way none of them had ever experienced before. Shelly led the way in her beautiful Pearl Dream, taking them through passages so lovely that Captain Dave and Larry gasped with amazement.
She showed them a shortcut through the Kelp Forest Maze that wound between the gentlest, most beautiful kelp fronds, where the light filtered down like green-gold sunshine. She knew exactly where the Dancing Dolphin Falls created the perfect current to carry them forward with ease. She guided them past underwater meadows where sea grass swayed like waves in the current, and where schools of fish created living rainbows in the water.
As they travelled together, they began to see other racers who were in trouble. A submarine shaped like a swordfish had gotten tangled in some thick kelp. Without hesitation, Larry swam over and used his claws to carefully cut the sub free.
A little further along, they found a group of young fish racers who had gotten lost in a confusing part of the course. Shelly immediately knew the way and guided them back to the right path.
When they saw a submarine that had run out of fuel, Captain Dave shared some of their emergency supplies without a second thought.
"You know," Larry said as they helped push a submarine with a broken propeller to the nearest repair station, "I think we might be having the best race ever, even though we're probably going to finish last."
"We are not racing against the other competitors," Captain Dave realised with a smile. "We are racing to see how many friends we can help along the way."
By the time they reached the final stretch of the race course, word had spread throughout French Creek about the three friends who had spent their whole race helping others. Sea creatures lined the course, cheering not for the fastest racers, but for Captain Dave, Larry, and Shelly.
"Look!" called out Bella the blue fish, who was watching from a piece of coral. "Here come the real heroes of the race!"
The three friends looked around in amazement as more and more sea creatures joined in the cheering. The water was filled with the sounds of celebration, and everywhere they looked, they saw smiling faces and waving fins.
As they approached the finish line, they could see that most of the other racers had already finished. The rocket submarine had won first place, the silver arrow submarine had come in second, and the octopi submarine had taken third. The winners were lined up, holding their trophies and posing for pictures with Judge Wellington.
"Well," Shelly said with a sigh, "I guess we're going to finish in last place after all. Are you disappointed, Captain Dave?" asked gently.
Shelly thought for a moment, then broke into the biggest smile any of them had ever seen. "You know what? I'm not disappointed at all! This has been the most wonderful race of my entire life. I've made the best friends I could ever ask for, I've helped other racers, and I've seen French Creek in a whole new way."
As they crossed the finish line together, side by side by side, the cheering from the watching sea creatures grew so loud that it echoed throughout all of French Creek.
Judge Wellington swam over to them, his expression warm and proud. "Captain Dave, Larry, and Shelly," he said in his deep, official voice, "while you may have finished last in terms of time, you have shown everyone here what racing is truly about. You've demonstrated kindness, friendship, and the spirit of helping others."
He paused and looked around at all the sea creatures who were still cheering. "Therefore, I am proud to present you with a very special award."
Judge Wellington produced a trophy that was even more beautiful than the golden shell. It was made from the most gorgeous pearl any of them had ever seen, and it was inscribed with the words "For Outstanding Sportsmanship and Friendship."
"This," Judge Wellington announced, "is the Pearl of Kindness Award, and it goes to racers who understand that the real victory comes not from being the fastest, but from being the most helpful and kind."
One by one, the other racers they had helped during the race swam over to thank them: the swordfish submarine pilot, the lost young fish, the racer who had run out of fuel, and the submarine with the broken propeller. They all came to express their gratitude.
As the sun began to set above French Creek, casting beautiful golden rays down through the water, Captain Dave, Larry, and Shelly sat on the Mellow Submarine, sharing kelp sandwiches and looking at their beautiful Pearl of Kindness trophy.
"I learned something important today," Shelly said thoughtfully. "I always thought racing was about proving how fast you could go, but it's really about the journey and the friends you make along the way."
